It suffered damage in a hard landing in August 1971, as recorded in the unit's history: “The 14th August 1971 proved to be a day that Captain William C. Brown will remember for some time to come. While engaged in support of US Army Alaska at Bethel, Alaska the U-1A Otter he piloted had an engine failure. Captain Brown demonstrated exceptional skill in landing the powerless aircraft on the few remaining feet of runway”. The Otter was salvaged for spare parts and the remains scrapped. It was deleted from the Army inventory in September 1971.
